Next Guitar Society Meeting

Oct 2001 From: Victor Salkowitz Subject: Guitar Society
Dear Gentle Folk, The Acoustic Guitar Society of Ashland had
its first meeting Friday evening, Sept. 28th. We had a showing
of 11 people which provided a nice cross section of those who
wanted to play and listen, and those who wanted to just listen.
The music was rich, diverse, and senstively played by all. David
Rogers gave a nice mini concert. As he played, guitarist and
guitar gradually disappeared leaving only the music, the highlight
of which was a Jazz-Baroque-Fusion piece which left us all stupified
and agog. There was some discussion at the conclusion of our
meeting regarding membership dues and a meeting place. It seemed
unanimous that a full year's dues was too much. We agreed to
pay at the door next time. Next meeting will therefore have a
3.00 cover charge to pay for room rent. There was also some concern
about meeting in a church. Some ideas were tossed around but
none agreed upon except that we would talk about it more. In
the meantime we will meet again at the First Congressional Church,
717 Siskiyou Blvd, Ashland. Some felt that if we brought a little
wine and munchies the gathering would be so much the better.
According to David Rogers, who has worked as musical director
of the church, this would not be poo-pooed by the church adminstration
people. I am therefore encouraging folks to feel free to bring
a little something (if it's munchies, make them crunchless, please,
like cheese, fruit, pastry). It was also discussed that Friday
night was not a good night to meet. People might have other gigs
or just want to party hardy. We agreed to meet on a Monday evening
instead. The 2nd Acoustic Guitar Society meeting will therefore
meet on Monday evening, October 29th, and go from 7:30 to 9:30.
My thanks again to all who participated in creating this evening
of talent. Best Wishes, Victor Salkowitz

Dec 2001 From: Victor Salkowitz Subject: Guitar Society: Agenda
for Mon., Dec. 10th
Dear Folks, The next meeting of the Guitar Society will be Monday,
Dec. 10th, 7:30, 717 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland (First Congressional
Church). Agenda: 1. In Concert Theme: "Original Works."
Guitarists are encouraged to come forward and play original compositions,
then entertain questions and comments about technique, style,
the Creative Process, and Other Such Things. 2. In The Works
Members will have the opportunity to discuss issues related to
the growth and development of the society. Questons for consideration:
What is the Guitar Society's mission? How can we create a guitar
society that will flourish? 3. In The Spotlight Members are invited
to play any piece(s) which they have prepared for the meeting.
4. In Conclusion Members set the agenda for the next meeting.
"An organization is something that people bring into existence--it
has a form and personality and life of its own. In creating our
guitar society, we have the opportunity to determine the form
it takes, the nature of its personality..." ---Dennis Johnson,
group member "The Guitar is the most unpredictable and least
reliable musical instrument in existence and also the sweetest,
the warmest, the most delicate, whose meancholic voice awakes
in our soul exquisite reveries." ---A. Segovia

Meeting
Dear Guitar Enthusiasts,
The next guitar society meeting will be held: Tuesday, January
8th, 2002 7:00 pm to 9:00pm
The address of the meeting place has been changed. Grant Ruiz
has graciously offered his abode.
Agenda Items:
Please forward any agenda items, ideas, suggestions, you may
have for the next meeting. If you wish, please feel free to use
the addresses on this email proper so that everybody can read
what you have in mind and perhaps have their own ideas sparked.
Thus far it has been suggested that we bring munchies.
The last meeting was very nice. While a bit cold in the building
(the furnace had broken down), the playing and dialogue were
extremely stimulating. Several of us talked about how we experienced
the creative process while writing music--ranging from wrestling
with a long and frustrating labor of love to a relatively effortless
outpouring of musical composition. Joe Thompson was present,
offering his wisdom and talent as an active guitar instructor/performer
of 35 years.
Again please feel free to respond with suggestions either by
group forum or directly to me. Hope your Holiday Season is healthy
and fun.
Sincerely, Victor
